there goes summer over the hill

we had a bonus post-vacation week of sweeties, of dog walks and korean tacos and bubble tea and bookshops and movies and wading pools in the drizzly rain.

i'm certain that there's no one minnow would rather have spent his ninth birthday with. here, jonah and oona sing happy birthday while presenting him with a birthday-candled frosty paws (oona blew the candle out for him before he carried it happily away in his mouth).

Ooo--Brief History of the Dead--what an interesting premise, eh? It was a long time ago when I read it, so don't remember enough for detailed discussion, but I do remember being really intrigued by the idea.

yes--i do enjoy all of kevin brockmeier's books, at least the 3 or 4 i've read, and this may have been my favorite. but i'm always left more intrigued by the IDEA than the actual book, do you know what i mean? this was especially true of "the illumination," which is about people's pain becoming visible, as light you can see when you look at someone.

I know exactly what you mean. "Brief History" seemed somehow unfinished, undeveloped, not quite put together. It's such a shame because with such a great idea (plus the addition of the arctic/antarctic element, which makes any book interesting to me)it should have been a great book, and it wasn't, quite. And now the idea has been used. I've been meaning to read "The Illumination"; is it worth it despite the above?

adam, of COURSE minnow misses oona too!

kg, i think it is worth reading--the idea is so lovely, and there are wonderful moments in it. still, i was left wishing it had been a better (more cohesive?) story.
