How do you raise kids that are comfortable having adventures like this at 18? My cousin is 17 and my aunt just made the "big step" of letting her walk down a different grocery aisle by herself.

i wish i knew the answer to that, amber! i find it impossible to take full responsibility for the way this adventure girl (and her adventure brother) turned out. i'm sure we (their parents) had something to do with it, but mostly it's just the magic of who they are. however, we tried hard to say "no" only when absolutely necessary. to trust their judgment about being ready to try things. to not allow a lack of money to be a reason they "couldn't" do things. to not allow our fear to be a reason they couldn't do things. that's the biggie, i think - attempting, every day, not to be afraid of the world and the way it can harm your children. or at least to try not to pass that fear on to them.
