sacred games

i just finished reading sacred games, which my dad loaned me before christmas. i was completely absorbed in it most of the time i was reading, and it is a big, fat 900-pager, so i am feeling a little bereft now that i've finished it. it is a mystery/police/gangster novel that takes place in india, mostly in mumbai. it was really odd and fun (and a little confusing) to see slumdog millionaire at the same time i was reading this. when i read books that take place in india, even when they vividly illustrate the dirty, crowded, and dangerous nature of a city like mumbai, i always get hungry for indian food. i love when characters buy chai from the chai-wallah or eat homemade pakoras. i propose an indian theme to my upcoming oscar night party (confirmed guests so far = m, boo, and my mom) - i have a feeling that slumdog will be well represented at the oscars. who wants to come?!

i got hungry for indian food reading a story in the textbook of the 7th-grade english class i "help out" in (mostly i just sit there.) it was a story about a boy who wants to ask a girl on a date, but he can't because her father doesn't let her date. and she is indian, and at the end he meets her family in the park, and the mom says, "i'll get samosas for all of us!" the dad says, "oh, tim won't like samosas," and the boy says, "but i love indian food!" isn't that heartwarming?

that is absolutely heartwarming, made even more so by the mention of samosas. we will do an indian film festival when you come home, with indian snacks and chai!
