bunnies

(image borrowed from dpw)

this bunny, if i remember correctly, is from my childhood. it's on the plaza in kansas city (that's pronounced with a flat midwestern "a" by the way, not like the plahza hotel in new york), along with a bunch more (and weren't there some other animals, too? an odd turtle or something like that?). i used to love walking around there at easter time -- when we lived in kansas (approximately between the years i was in kindergarten and second grade), there was a huge family brunch every sunday (at putsch's, i think). it's funny, those brunches are among my happiest childhood memories, but my actual memories of them are very vague and sketchy: walking past the aforementioned bunnies and the many fountains; peering in the window at russell stover; and the many choices of syrup for our pancakes at brunch. strawberry, blueberry,...there were at least four different brightly colored syrups. and strawberry pancakes.

yes, a turtle, camel, elephant,...?

Yeah, it was all about the syrup! Also, I remember how the whole milk would color the silver spoons, and how dark it was inside, sitting in those booths.

wasn't there a bright green syrup too? what was that, mint?

the way i remember it, he shoplifted a silver spoon by slipping it into his DIAPER. but i think i've made the story more exciting in my mind... did we keep the spoon? i think we did.

well, yes, I think it was sorta like that, but I thought the Mr. Rogers potty chair memories were probably enough of that sort of thing for one expectant father to be reading on his sister's blog ! by the way, i don't remember anything about those bunnies - how did I miss them? the other thing I remember about putch's was the coolness of the darkness. actually, I think the place we ate sunday brunch was also a bar at night.
