breaking news from maine

this is the big news today: it's march. and it's still winter.

it strikes me sometimes that some people don't deal with moving mountains and mountains of snow in their daily lives. or have, basically, six months of winter. some of them are even closely related to me! i'm usually struck with this realization when i'm shoveling the driveway.

which m heroically did all by himself this morning, heaving inches numbered approximately 88 through 94 from the driveway to the towering piles alongside it. yes, that's right, 94 inches of snow this winter. so far. this morning's storm was number nineteen for portland. the city's out of sand and salt. our arms are tired. i've personally witnessed four people falling flat on their backs on the ice. i'm not complaining, i'm just describing for the benefit of my relatives in warmer climes, so they can revel in their freedom from the tyranny of winter. also, i'm complaining a little bit.
