madeleine l'engle

i was really sad to read that she died yesterday at the age of 88. there's almost no era of my childhood that isn't wrapped up in a memory involving one of her books. i believed entirely in the wrinkle in time trilogy at one point, and i loved the austin family series almost as much (it seemed more soap opera-ish, more "teenagery"). although, come to think of it, i remember one line in the moon by night which infuriated me at around age eleven or twelve, something about "dad doesn't like women to wear pants, so mother never wears them." i crossed it out in my copy of the book. i can forgive madeleine l'engle, though -- she was born in 1918, after all.

We spent a lot of this weekend listening to A Wrinkle in Time on tape, read by Madeleine L'Engle herself. Jonah and Oona were mesmerized. Actually, we all were.
